As many of you bloggers have known, the popular Adverlets blogging advertising network went down for a few days. The reason is that they have not renewd the advertlets.com domain name, causing all blogs/site with their javascript to be “hijacked” and redirected to a placeholder site. The problem has since been resolved and Josh Lim, owner of Advertlets have apologised and explained to all Adverlets users. He mass e-mailed his apologies and explanation and also put up in the Advertlets site.

However considering that I’m not a very forgiving guy when it comes to technicality screw ups, because Im in this field(kind of) and especially in this case where it affects my blog, and also something which is so simple even I can do in 15 minutes(domain renewal) makes me frustrated at Advertlets. Someone must be sleeping on the job.

Today, I went to the Advertlets site to check on the progress. I then saw the announcement and decided to see what other people leave as comments. To my surprise, so many Advertlet supporters say, “It’s ok”, “Human makes mistakes”, “We bloggers are behind you”. Well, how weird, not even one of the 100 million blog owners are pissed off.

Well then, I decided to leave my thoughts, which I reproduced here:

I got the mass email from Josh Lim about this. At least someone was willing to explain what is going on, which is rare in Malaysia. So I decided to come here and leave some comment.

Well, well, what a mess. This is some MAJOR screw up you have here. Something cause by a simple problem.

Oh, so many Advertlet supporters, saying “We bloggers support you” and such. Well, sorry, you don’t represent me when you said that. Speak for yourself.
Funny, I don’t see any negative comment. Selective filtering perhaps, hope this one gets through.

I’m extremely disappointed at this avoidable mistake, that even an 18 year old tech savvy student knows how to renew their domain in 15 minutes, no excuse for an internet-based company, even though it’s a start up, to conveniently forget to renew the domain, which is by the way, serving as you claimed so proudly on the front page, 100 million blogs/site.

Heck, even I get reminders to renew my domain. And as you can see from clicking on my blog link, not a popular or important one. Nevertheless, I remember to renew!

Imagine my horror when I could not even log into my own blog! It keep directing me to another webpage that is not even attractive at all. If I wasnt IT savvy then I would have thought someone sabotaged my blog. Well, guess what..

I had such high hopes for Advertlets when it first came out together with Nuffnang ( one is advertlets logo is better designed and webpage is better layout. ) However Nuffnang did improved their logo and site over time. Even their ads got better.

Sorry Advertlets, sorry Josh Lim, you just lost at least one blogger. Btw, you can keep my spare balance, I won’t be needing it anymore.

Sorrylah, even though my blog isnt that big or popular, or it wouldnt even affect Advertlets at all, but still its against my principle to “just let this one slip by”.

I’m sure there are more to the story behind this fiasco, and I’m sure Josh Lim is a busy man, and so I don’t really blame him for overlooking this and I’m pretty sure someone who is in charge of this is getting the heat. It could be a sabotage or purely a human error.

Its true human do make mistake, and its also true that they pay the price of it. Trust is not easy to earn once you lost it. From now on, I’m with Nuffnang all the way, unless they too screwed up big time like you did.
If that happens, I’ll just go ads-free and do my readers a BIG favour. At least my blog wont get hijacked out of the blue.

Nuff’ said.

EDIT: A quick check on Advertlet’s site revealed that they did not approve my comment which is the one in italic above. Looks like they only approve “nice” & “supportive” comments from their supporters. Expected already.
